CR’s hiring

Code is law. CR is recruiting engineers, public interest technologists, and entrepreneurs to develop innovative new ways of serving consumers. See opportunities here.

What does the overturn of Roe v. Wade mean for consumers?

The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade raises urgent questions about how access to abortion varies across states and whether healthcare data is private. Web searches, emails, and texts about abortion generally aren’t protected by HIPAA. The same goes for period tracker apps. See CR’s summary of the state of play.

Congress is getting closer to holding Big Tech accountable

Antitrust talks are heating up and CR is working on several fronts to advance bipartisan bills in the U.S. Senate that would help address the market dominance of tech giants. CR recently wrote senators in support of a key bill that would set fair market rules to prevent incumbents from abusing their market power. Check out this segment with John Oliver on Last Week Tonight and our Twitter thread that summarizes the bills.

New York passes historic Right to Repair law

Earlier this month, New York became the first state in the U.S. to pass a right-to-repair bill for electronics, based in part on CR’s model legislation. It requires manufacturers of phones, tablets and other devices to share their repair information, tools, and parts with independent repair shops, not just their own stores or partners — and consumers would have the freedom to fix the devices they own. If the governor signs the bill into law, manufacturers will no longer have a monopoly on who can repair their products, consumers will save money, and we’ll cut down on waste.
