Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced it is moving forward with privacy rulemaking to address the issue of excessive data collection and use of personal information in the absence of a federal privacy law. CR joined over 40 organizations last year calling on the Commission to issue a privacy rulemaking and teamed up with the Electronic Privacy Information Center earlier this year to provide a roadmap for how the FTC could issue privacy rules under its unfair practices authority. CR teamed up with researchers at Northeastern University and Pomona College to measure the accuracy and accessibility of automatic captions systems on popular video platforms, including Zoom, Facebook, YouTube, Google Meet, and others. Researchers found that the auto-caption technologies of these services often include errors that pose challenges for users who are deaf or hard of hearing, or whose first language isn’t English.
